When September ends.
As spring continues to unfold into springtime The Poor Knights start to change as the water slowly warms. There continue to be plenty of Dolphins near and at the islands - at least 2 of the crossings and twice at The Islands themselves we've had some lengthy encounters with our mammalian cousins. Northern Arch, Hideaway Bay, Barren Arch and South Harbour have had dolphins come up to the divers or boat.
A steady westerly flow has seen us over on the East Side for a majority of dives. The compact colour of Cave Bay Wall, the Splendid sides of Barren Arch and the overhangs of Air Bubble Cave at Hope point being some of the best spots over the period. Fraser's Landing was a change of location for night diving and provided some different species of Nudibranch, Sea Hare and some worm-thing!? Always good to somewhere slightly unusual to get to see some new wildlife.
Northern Arch has been spectacular as ever - with some dolphin interaction nearer Ann's Rock. Gem's and Vercos are starting to become more prolific and a few spots are starting to get the Bluebell Turnicate coverage of spring. The seals are still playing around Hideaway Bay and Pancake Rocks - even the dolphins came over to check out the splashing! The entrance to Rikoriko had a few carpet sharks cruising around as they tend to at this time of year.
The morning sun was streaming down onto the sand at Fraggle Rock for an early dive and the afternoon sun shines equally brightly through the side window of Blue Maomao Arch. The waters are slowly being populated with Salp and other strange jellies (even the nasty purple pelagics ones are back). The beginning of Daylight saving means later night dives, but also longer days and more chance to experience all the wonders of The Poor Knights Islands.
There's been some fantastic photos taken by the divers and Ali has had a couple of her's shortlisted on the Underwater Festival Photo Comp (check out Nudi Heaven and Jelly) Kent too has taken some fantastic shots from the boat, of the divers and the sea life (some of them here).
The end of September also saw the last of the 10*10*10 challenges and we again managed to get to some of the great sites. Wild-Beast to Northern Arch, 12 Fathom Reef and Red Baron Caves were knocked off the list and in all we managed to dive all but one of the sites on the list, which was, ironically, the 'safe go-to' dive of BigEye-SharkFin-ElTorito. The winner of the free weekend was Christian, who managed 9 1/2 (or is it 9 1/3) sites - we look forward to seeing you for more excellent diving over the summer!!
Our spring schedule has had a few tweeks to dates etc, so check out the calendar and see if you can join us for some spring diving!! The water's getting warmer, the nutrients are on the up and there's an explosion of life just waiting to blow........you don't want to miss out!!!!!
