Waitangi Weekend

The long weekend gave us 3 days to savour the diving out at the Knights. With heaps of action it was great diving all over.

The trip out on Friday wasn't the nicest ever, so we started with some gentle diving at Hideaway Bay followed by Middle Arch. Plenty of Rays, Mosaics and Demoiselles about to keep the interest up. Then a day and a night dive on Trev's Rock. The day dive had its usual number of Sandaggers and Nudibrachs. The night dive, however, threw up a rarer treat - a shark cruising along the sand line. Caught in a dive light it looked 'Over 6 foot long', well maybe, but big enough to get the heart pumping.

After some food, a beer and then a nights sleep we headed up to Northern Arch for the morning dive. Now, I don't always enjoy N. Arch (worrying about depth currents etc), but this was truly an exception. A gentle current in the Arch was perfect for keeping the fish cruising and the divers hanging. At the corner a large school of Demoiselle were flitting about - a few seconds later 6 medium Kingfish cut through water, turned, checked us out then went about their morning business. In the overhang were a few dozen Golden Snapper, just lurking in a big huddle. Above them a couple of Stingrays hovered for a while before making their way along the northern wall. A few Snapper hung in the current as we departed to make our way along the southern wall. All the way along there were schools of Demoiselle and Blue Maomao. A bit further out in the blue Pink Maomao were heading out to the point. At the point there were dozens of large Snapper, Blue and Pink Maomao mingling and Larger Kingfish buzzing them all and circling out in the clear water. One of the best dives I've done at Northern Arch and we didn't even see a Shark!!!! To contrast this we headed to Taravana for a bit of a cave dive. Crinoid cliff then gave us some macro diving with the heaps of Nudis always on show here. The day was rounded off withe a night dive at Middle Arch - I went in a bit earlier and just sat in the arch being buzzed by Stingrays - they would still be there for the night divers.

Sunday was a bit more gentle, but Rikoriko had a load of Stingrays out for an early morning swim. Mary's Wall had Kingies circling under the boat and Morays hanging over the rocks. What a great weekend, with 10 dives and some memorable sights.
