March diving madness
The month started with an 11 day trip with Brandon Cole. The weather didn't really play ball and we had to hide in Middle Arch for about 30 hours, but got some great shots. He said it'd be a month or two until he's processed his shots, but managed to get a few tips myself and take a couple of OK shots:
He was very impressed, and maybe a bit surprised, at the variety and abundance of life at the Knights, which showed by the fact we spent 11 days just there and could easily have managed more.
The TradeMe boys came along for a long weekend straight after and had some good dives, some beers and some more great dives. Being from Wellington most of them found the 20 degree water almost toasty!!
A couple of weekend trips either side f a 5 day trip ended the month. During the week the guys on board were treated to some amazing sights. 4 sharks at Northern Arch - they reckon Makos, and who am I to argue!? On a second dive there they also spotted 2 turtles. It got even better at Wild Beast Point when 2 of them got in and were snorkelling whilst they waited - 'There's something big here@ came a voice. From the boat it was clear to see it was a Manta Ray! They all hurried in and tried to find it. While I was watching bubbles I look out and saw the Manta breech out of the water about 30m from the boat - what a splash they make.
The last weekend we started at The Pinnacles and had a good dive at Tie Dye Arch. On our journey to the main island we spotted a pod of something heading our way. It turned out to be 200+ Dolphins and maybe 50 Pilot Whales - what an amazing sight. That afternoon we anchored in Maroro Bay and spotted a small shark fin cruising the waters. Two keen snorkellers got in and tried to get a photo, but the shark kept evading them.
The water is still 20 degrees and vis is still really good. March has been busy, and some of the best diving I've had in 3 years at the Knights.
