Poor Knight Easter Weekend
We arrived on Friday to a fairly gusty day and decided on a first dive in Maroro Bay. Plenty of fish were cruising around The Gardens and provided a nice intro for the weekend. During lunch we spotted some Dolphins casually passing by, jusy slowly making their way north. We made our way up to Middle Arch and the dolphons appeared alonside and followed us up the islands for a while. On anchoring the dolphins came into the bay and Kent jumped in to take some photos. This pattern was to continue all weekend - it was though the Dolphins were on holiday at The Knights too and were just enjoying themselves. They did have a few juveniles, so maybe they wanted to hang out in a good feeding ground!?
Meanwhile, under the water, there were plenty of Stingrays and lots of Eagle Rays too - especially around Hideaway Bay. Lots of schooling fish at Northern Arch, Serpent Rock and Landing Bay Pinnacle. The highlight of the trip, however, was during a dive outside Scary Cave. A very pleasant dive out to Oculina point was finshed off beautifully when we returned to Scary Cave and look along the wall. Coming straight toward us was a Sunfish and a few Kingies in tow. We watched as the Sunfish circled around the bay - all the time the Kingies were brushing up against it and pushing it around. The Sunfish seemed to see us as a way of getting rid of the Kingies and made a course stariaght toward us on a number of occasions - it pretty much barged into us. The video shows it on a final pass before heading off with its 'friends' in hot persuit.
To finish the trip we dived Red Baron and the schools of Maomao were streaming in and out of the cracks. The dolphins were still gently swimming up and down the Islands. The old saying of 'Where there are dolphins, look out for sharks!' also came into play as Kent spotted 3 Bronzies circling out in the blue.
The Poor Knights Easter trip was no egg and with visibility still 20m and water temp 20 degrees there should still be lots of great diving to be had.
