Poor Knights Winter Wonderland

It's July and winter, but that didn't stop us heading out for a 3 day trip to explore the Poor Knights Winter Wonderland...

Friday morning and we were loading up with all the Techie gear for the weekend's diving - 3 rebreathers, a few twin sets, plus stages, O2 bottles and bail-outs all adds up to an impressive array on the back of the boat. The breeze built during the morning, so we arrived in South Harbour to get out of the NWer. First dive on Fraggle Rock followed by another around the channel - Greg managed to get round to The Rock and spotted a shark in the kelp. Apparently it got a bit close to the kelp and momentarly got its tail caught, but with a powerful flick managed to free itself before getting too aggitated! A couple of long dives meant it was a night dive and overnight stay in Rocklily Inlet - a few new Nudibranchs for Marty on his loooong night dive.

Day 2 started at Cream Gardens - no sharks, but some great vis and some deep dives first up. A few folk managed to get an extra dive in here before we headed down to Matt's Crack and Mineshaft Cave. On twins and breathers it is pretty easy to do both sites at once and so it was - a whole array of cylinders and camera gear entered the water for some fantastic diving. The day ended watching the winter sunset from outside of Rikoriko Cave, whilst some opted for a late afternoon dive. The evening was spent in Rikoriko and Glen even managed a night dive.

The final day saw us back at Cream Gardens and another 65m morning dive and with 20m+ vis a great way to start a Sunday. We popped round the corner to Barren Arch and bathed in the midday sun. Another dive with good vis and water still 15C. A pleasant cruise back to Tutukaka rounded off a wonderful winter weekend at The Poor Knights.
