Springtime Knights

Daylight saving has started, so summer is well on the way. Springtime has seen plenty of action at The Poor Knights, including Dolphins, Seals and the odd Hammerhead.

The end of September heralds the start of Daylight Savings Time and the start of Summer Time! The water is still a chilly 14-15 degrees, but it's all uphill from here on. This brings about a change in the water - the blue gives way to a green tinge as nutrients and micro-organisms enrich the waters. The vis may be a bit lower for a few weeks, but the things to see explodes into action.

For about a week we had a small pod of dolphins hanging out in Maroro Bay - jumping and playing with snorkellers, checking out the dive boats and generally cruising the walls of the bay. Underwater the Blue Bell Tunicates are in full bloom and covering the walls of the islands. While we were diving at Northern Arch we noticed about 5 Hammerheads circling Anne's Rock - the divers didn't see them underwater, but they made an impressive sight from the boat. Stingrays, Snapper and Morays are all increasing in numbers and it could be shaping up to be an action packed year.

Another winter visitor that has been very playful this year has been the Seals. They are around The Pinnacles in reasonable numbers, but they are also being spotted by Fruitcake Rock, Barren Arch and playing with our divers in Taravana Cave. Two of them were cruising around the divers on their 'Intro to Cave' Course being run by Jamie at TechDiveNZ - a step above their Cavern Course and the next step to Full Cave Certification.

So far Spring has been pretty exciting and we expect the diving to get even better as we head into Summer. We have a couple of weeks break as we take Mazurka for her annual hull scrub and anti-fouling, but we'll be back for Labour Day Weekend so come and join us for 3 days of the The Poor Knights Springtime Show.....
